Funding for Youth To Play a Sport

We know that as a parent, you want your child to have every opportunity in the world – and that includes participating in a sport that they are passionate about!

My client is an exemplary athlete who is passionate about volleyball. He is proud of his Inuk heritage and comes from a northern community where volleyball is very popular. He is working very hard to achieve his goal of joining a competitive volleyball team which I believe, will also help him to integrate into his new Ottawa community. As a member of a large family, it is very difficult to afford extra-curricular activities. The funding that he has received from the Maverick Youth Opportunities Fund has been integral in helping him play a sport he loves. Your financial assistance is very appreciated by him, his family, and his community!

What Funding is Available?

Competitive Programs: MYOF will provide up to $2,500/ year to athletes who compete in competitive, high-performance, or elite sport programs within the National Capital Region. These programs are usually 6 to 10 months in length.

Recreational/Learn-to-Play Programs: MYOF will provide up to $600 per year (September 1 – August 31) for athletes who are involved in a recreational sport and learn to play program within the National Capital Region. These programs are usually between 6-10 weeks in length.

What are the Criteria to Receive Funding?

Applicants must be between 9 and 18 years of age
Resident of National Capital Region (Ottawa, Ontario)
Parents (or legal guardians) must complete the application, providing information regarding:
- Your financial circumstances, including your total household income (proof of income may be requested).
- The specific sports program or activity the child wishes to participate in.
- The number of dependants within the household.
  *Please note that Statistic’s Canada’s most recent Low-Income Cut-off (LICO) will be used to guide the level of funding provided.
- Any special circumstances that can be considered.
Proof of registration for a recreational or competitive sport program in the National Capital Region must be provided.

What is the Deadline?

The deadlines are spread throughout the year to meet the needs of various programs that have different starting dates. The deadlines to submit your application are as follows:

For Maverick Volleyball Progams:
- Learn-to-Play Recreational Programs – one week before the program’s start date
- Regional Training Centre – September 30, 2025/ January 26, 2026
- Provincial/National Teams – September 30, 2025
For other sport programs:
- September 30th
- November 30th
- January 31st
- March 31st
- May 31st
- July 31st

How will the Funding be Determined and Distributed?

Once your application is received, we will confirm its receipt by email. Every effort will be made to review the application within one week of the deadline date (listed above). We are committed to providing every applicant with our decision as quickly as possible.
Applications are reviewed by the Disbursement Committee, which assesses each applicant’s financial need and the potential impact of the grant on the child’s ability to participate in a sport activity.
Priority will be given to applicants demonstrating the greatest financial need, as well as those who can benefit significantly from sports participation in terms of personal development, health outcomes, and social inclusion.
A proof of enrolment/payment receipt is required for reimbursement. MYOF will e-transfer the funds to you directly upon approval of your application for financial assistance.If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at application@maverickyouthfund.ca

+ – How does MYOF determine the amount of financial assistance that an applicant may receive?

Every year, the amount of funds we receive from our donors as well as the number of applications we receive for financial assistance will determine the amount of financial assistance that any individual may receive.

+ – If my family is not in a low-income category, but have financial struggles due to unforeseen circumstance, will my application still be considered?

Yes. We understand that life is unpredictable and may place financial strain on your family. We do not want this strain to prevent your child from participating in a sport they love! Please tell us your story as best as you can, and we will consider your request.

+ – I must sign up to my program/ team prior to the deadline or I will lose my spot. However, my participation will depend on whether I receive MYOF’s financial assistance. What do I do?

Please indicate your timeline on the application and the Disbursement Committee will make every effort to complete our assessment of your application within this timeline.
