MYOF Helps Introduce 600 Girls to the Power of sport

On October 19, 2026, the Maverick Youth Opportunities Fund (MYOF) and Maverick Volleyball proudly participated in Sports Day the Girls’ Way, an exciting initiative organized by Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) at Lansdowne Park, designed to introduce approximately 600 young girls to the joy and possibilities of sport.

The event brought together girls from Gr. 4-8 from local schools for an action-packed day featuring four sports: volleyball, cheer, rugby and ultimate frisbee. Through hands-on activities and encouragement from experienced coaches and volunteers, participants had the opportunity to explore new skills, build confidence and discover the fun of being active.

More Than Just Volleyball

MYOF was thrilled to facilitate the volleyball component, bringing together an incredible team of Maverick coaches and athletes to introduce participants to the fundamentals of the game.

The coaches guided four groups of 150 enthusiastic girls through interactive 30-minute sessions focused on learning new skills, teamwork and having fun.

For many girls, the event offered an opportunity to experience volleyball in a welcoming, supportive environment where the emphasis wasn’t on competition or performance, but on trying something new, building confidence and celebrating every success.

The Power of Female Role Models

One of the most meaningful aspects of the event was the opportunity for young girls to learn from and interact with experienced female coaches.

By sharing their knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for volleyball, these volunteers helped demonstrate that girls belong in sport—as athletes, teammates, leaders and future coaches.

Events like Sports Day The Girls’ Way remind us that sometimes all it takes is one positive experience, one encouraging coach or one moment of success to spark a lifelong interest in sport.

A True Community Effort

A heartfelt thank-you to our Maverick coaches, especially Erin Junker who led the session, as well as all our volunteer coaches including Louise Smith, Sydney MacLellan, Christine Hachokake, Wilfreda Edward, Charlie Cudmore, and Ngan Cao, as well as athletes, Myla, Chloe, and Emma from the U15 Maverick Stampede team. These remarkable coaches and volunteers generously shared their time, energy and expertise to make the volleyball experience welcoming, engaging and memorable.

A special thank-you to John Spack, who assisted MYOF in acquiring the equipment needed to keep 150 girls engaged in a safe and fun environment.

The Maverick Volleyball community and the Maverick Way truly shined during this event.

MYOF also extends its appreciation to OSEG for organizing this inspiring initiative and creating opportunities for girls to experience the power of sport.
