MYOF’s FIrst “sets for seniors” community event

What happens when you bring together a group of adventurous seniors and a team of passionate young volleyball players?

Something truly special.🌟

MYOF is proud to share that our first Sets for Seniors event was a tremendous success. Residents from Wellington West Retirement Community  joined the 13U Maverick Hawks for an afternoon of adapted sitting volleyball, laughter, and connection—followed by celebratory refreshments.☕đŸȘ

This event was designed to give young athletes the opportunity to live the Maverick Way——and they did exactly that. Young athletes learned how to Be Bold and get out of their comfort zone, Be Respectful to wonderful seniors within our community, Be Grateful by giving back to their community, and Be Patient as they learn a new sport with new people.

Residents were delighted not only by the game itself, but by the chance to play alongside youth, share stories, and build meaningful connections. In just two hours, new friendships were formed, a lasting partnership began, and our vision of “a stronger community built by exceptional youth” came to life. Residents even cheered the

I really enjoyed [this event]! I love sports, and these young ladies were so nice!

Thank you to Mayor Sutcliffe for taking the time to join and support this wonderful community initiative. Your presence helped make the event even more meaningful and memorable. đŸ’«

A special thank you to Coach John Salem for creating this opportunity for his athletes to experience the value, joy, and impact of giving back to the community.

MYOF would also like to recognize the incredible Maverick athletes who made the afternoon so special for the residents. We were thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the experience just as much as the seniors and are already looking forward to doing it again! We were especially inspired by one of the important lessons shared after the event:

No matter the age or ability, everyone wants to have fun and compete.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Wellington West Retirement Community for your warm welcome, enthusiasm, and partnership in bringing this event to life. We wish the newly formed “Wellington West Cushion Crushers” continued fun, friendship, and success as you keep playing seated volleyball together!
