One Year of Breaking Barriers and Building Opportunities!

Today marks the first anniversary of the Maverick Youth Opportunities Fund (MYOF) as a registered charity, and what a year it’s been! Together, we’ve helped more young people access the power of sport, regardless of financial status.  

As we celebrate this milestone, we’re thrilled to share the Top 10 Highlights from MYOF’s First Year. In no particular order (how could we possibly choose?): 

  1. 💰 Disbursed $34,466.68 to youth facing financial barriers – a 43.7% increase from 2023/24. 
  1. 🏐 Supported 41 young athletes, more than double last year’s 20. 
  1. 👧Promoted girls’ participation in sport: 56% of recipients were female. Why is this important to note? Because half of all Canadian girls quite sport by the age of 17!
  1. 💪Broke financial barriers: 57% of recipients came from low-income households (as defined by Statistics Canada). The remaining recipients were close to this threshold, as MYOF also considers individual family circumstances and financial hardships when assessing need.
  1. 🌍Welcomed newcomers: 37% of recipients identified themselves as newcomers to Canada, helping youth integrate through sport. 
  1. 💬Launched our first fundraising initiative, the “Pass-It-Forward” campaign, raising $23,000+ between November 12 and December 31. 
  1. 🏛️Hosted our first Annual General Meeting as a registered charity, establishing MYOF’s inaugural Board of Directors. 
  1. ⛳Presented the first Maverick Charity Golf Tournament, welcoming 132 golfers and raising approximately $26,000 to fund future programs. 
  1. 🤝Partnered with the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees Women’s Volleyball Team and the Maverick Club to deliver equipment and a skills workshop to a local high school team in a disadvantaged community. 
  1. 🎓Awarded four Scholarships of Excellence to graduating athletes who demonstrated outstanding achievement in athletics, academics, and community service. 

Together, we’re empowering youth to reach higher, play harder, and dream bigger.
